Incubation Project

First round application deadline: 2025.5.9 22:00 Beijing Time Now Open for Registration

Unlike most festivals that focus on "inviting performances as core content," the Shekou Theatre Festival is a festival centered on "original incubation as core content." Starting from creators submitting project outlines, through selection, nurturing, care, and accompaniment, unique and distinctive works are hatched. During the Shekou Theatre Festival, these works are presented to the public and further developed through exchange. Each year, the festival also invites scholars, experts, media, critics, and program curators from home and abroad to participate, giving young creators the opportunity to be seen and connected with the world.

New Space Performance

What is "New Space Performance"? The Shekou Theatre Festival defines it as creating performance content adapted for non-traditional theatre spaces. When performances are no longer confined to stages and audiences no longer sit in designated seats, the relationship between performers and audiences changes, and the level of public participation also shifts. "New Space Performance" is definitely not about simply moving traditional stage works to non-theatre spaces, but rather requires creators to consider the spirit of the new space, explore new performer-audience relationships and modes of expression, and re-engage the public with art — this is the challenge for creators.

New Playwriting

Writing should keep pace with the changes and rhythms of the times. The emergence of new writing brings our theatre closer to contemporary life. Behind the scenes, playwriting is an important art form and one of the starting points of artistic creation. With the increasing diversity of contemporary performance forms, the requirements for playwrights are different from before. Beyond textual skills, playwrights also need to understand spatial expression, theatrical control, scriptwriting for real conditions, and even game mechanics design. The Shekou Theatre Festival has gathered 51 script mentors, committed to creating an "essay exchange" experience. From writing workshops to mentor pairing, from completed scripts to staged readings, every step of playwriting no longer has to be a solitary battle.

Incubation Camp & Writing Workshop

Creative Camp

The Incubation Creative Camp and Writing Workshop aim to bring creators back to life as much as possible, focusing on living and establishing genuine connections with people.

Through the first round of selection, creators will be invited to Shekou to participate in the Incubation Creative Camp and Writing Workshop. Why go to great lengths to bring young creators to Shekou? Our hope is that when they arrive in the space, the space itself can speak to them, transforming their creative ideas into something more three-dimensional, more connected to local life.

In the Incubation Creative Camp and Writing Workshop, besides on-site visits in the spaces, exchanges with creators from various places, lectures and experience sharing, there is also a key component: one-on-one mentor/judge sessions. New Space judges will carefully listen to your creative proposals, point out issues and present various challenges; New Playwriting mentors work one-on-one through a team-building process — only through mutual dedication can the potential of both sides be unleashed, creating surprisingly wonderful works.

Student Testimonials
